New digital performer paintings by LRG’s Stella Tooth in London exhibitions May-September

A number of London exhibitions from May to September feature exciting new album cover sized digital performer paintings by the Lots Road Group’s Stella Tooth.

During lockdown Stella began experimenting with digital painting, using the Procreate App on her ipad pro with the game-changing pressure sensitive ipencil.

Using her skills as a traditional oil painter, she paints freehand inspired by a variety of photographs. Some she takes herself as resident artist at legendary music venue, the Half Moon Putney, some from visits to her local west London music venues like the famous Eel Pie Club (to read article about Eel Pie Island museum by the artist click here). Some are inspired by photos of rock stars by Getty photographer Solomon N’Jie, taken at the height of their fame in the 80s.

Now, to help celebrate The Ealing Club‘s Rock’s Diamond Year (where electronic blues all began in 1962 with @MarshallAmps setting up in nearby Hanwell the same year) and the continuing tradition of live music at the Half Moon Putney, Stella is exhibiting her digital paintings in different London venues this Spring and Summer.

Two of her musician artworks feature in the British Blues Exhibition at the Barbican Music Library from 26 May for four months. Others form part of Skylark Galleries art collective’s joint June exhibition at Spaghetti House Gallery in Holborn running until 19 June. And ‘Art & Sol’ – featuring both Sol’s rock photos and Stella’s interpretation of them – is the launch exhibition at the Ealing Project, Ealing Broadways’ new cinema, gig and exhibition space. Beneath The Moon & Under The Sun: a solo exhibition of work by LRG’s Maureen Nathan

Work on paper by Maureen Nathan

Thursday 9 – Sunday 19 June 2022
Private view – Wednesday 8 June 2022

A solo exhibition of work by award-winning artist Maureen Nathan is opening this June at The Fitzrovia Gallery, London. ‘Beneath The Moon & Under The Sun’ brings together works on paper produced over the last two and a half years.

Exploring and responding to the world around her, Nathan’s series of artworks bear witness to the outbreak of Covid and the months following. Opening with solitary silhouettes in moonlit gardens, tangled branches cloaked in darkness and obscurity, and unfurling into a colourful confetti of blooming flora, ‘Beneath The Moon & Under The Sun’ puts into visual form a timeline that maps not just night and day or the changing seasons, but Nathan’s own illuminations.

Through a variety of mediums – painting, collage and printmaking – Nathan uses the physical environment as a vehicle for discovery and enlightenment, taking what’s in front of her and turning it into a beautiful, dream-like narrative.

Reflecting on her surroundings, she says, “the natural world steadfastly follows its own rhythms, season after season, on land and on sea, and is an endless source of inspiration and solace.”

Born and raised on the West Coast of Canada, Maureen settled in the UK as a young adult. She divides her time between her home and studio in North London and her workspace in rural Dorset. Her work has been shown with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, The Royal Academy, Wells Art Contemporary and the Royal West of England Academy.

Beyond the door

The Lots Road Group has been working behind the scenes during lockdown on an exhibition that will reflect the extraordinary times we are going through.  If restrictions are lifted, we expect to stage the exhibition at Waterstones Gower Street’s art gallery from Monday 9 November 2020 to January 2021.

The exhibition, entitled ‘Beyond the door’ will show portraiture generated during confinement when our own front doors have had a heightened significance in their dual role as protection from harm and barrier to freedom. The theme allows exploration of both interior and exterior worlds and our subjects’ experiences during the pandemic. It will also nod towards the door as a symbolic portal through which we will enter a new, unfamiliar post viral world.

Isolation art – under corona skies

All of the artists in the Lots Road Group hope you are well in these challenging times. On the positive side, it’s encouraging us all to slow down, catch up with old friends – often in ways we had never heard of before, like Zoom – help our neighbours and enjoy some of the clearest, bluest skies we have ever seen.

We wanted to share with you what we’ve been up to during lockdown and to give you a link to museum resources to explore.

Firstly the LRG is busy planning (on Zoom!) its next exhibition for November at Waterstones in Bloomsbury, in the hope that lockdown will have been lifted by then. All we can tell you at this stage is that it will focus on portraits inspired by the current situation. Watch this space for more details.

These times, whilst unsettling, are also providing artists like us the chance to engage with a wider art community online. A number of LRG members are talking part in:

#portraitsfornhsheroes – a great Instagram portrait initiative set up by @tomcroftartist

Tom has invited artists to donate a free oil portrait to a nominated NHS frontline worker, created in lockdown from photographs. When the restrictions are lifted, Tom will arrange an exhibition of all the portraits. Portraits have already begun to roll in, including one from Alastair Adams, ex-President of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. LRG members that have signed up so far include Martin Burroughs, Christine Klein, Sarah Jane Moon, Hilary Puxley and Stella Tooth.

#artistsupportpledge – is another great Instagram lockdown initiative set up by @matthewburrowsstudio

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many artists around the world have found themselves without work, teaching, technical support, gallery work, exhibition and sales have disappeared. In an attempt to help alleviate some of this stress Matthew has instigated the #artistsupportpledge The concept is a simple one. You post images of your work to sell for no more than £200 each (excluding shipping). Anyone can then buy the work. Every time you reach £1,000 of sales you pledge to buy another artist’s work for £200. A number of LRG artists are supporting the artist support pledge including Sarah Jane Moon, Maureen Nathan and Stella Tooth.

Amazing 360 degree photos of Connected: the changing face of Britain

Another first – 360 degree views of our latest exhibition by Lots Road Group member Stuart Howitt.

The exhibition runs at Waterstones Gower Street until Thursday 10 January.  It is sponsored by Heatherleys and is in association with Children & the Arts. Many works – those connected to the theme and secondary works showing more of each artist’s practice – are for sale.

Thanks to all who came to last night’s Connected PV!

More than 175 people came to the Private view of Connected: the changing face of Britain last night.  It was fantastic to see so many of our sitters.  The Lots Road Group’s Hilary Puxley explained the intention of our exhibition, born of a simple idea in divisive times to portray a person to whom we had a personal connection and, like casting a pebble in a pond, to see where the ripples would take us.   The answer was that our connections extend very far indeed and reveal much about the identity of 21st century Britain.

She introduced Rosie Millard the CEO of our exhibition partner, Children & the Arts, who welcomed our partnership, not least because our show celebrates life with all its diversity and difference.  She spoke of the work of the charity to bring art into an active and lively engagement with children and young people, many of whom have not experienced art and creativity before.

We are hugely grateful, as always, to our exhibition sponsors where we all studied Heatherleys.
